2009 In Summation with Danny Gabai

I began prepping for this show with the typical top 10 list idea.  As I continued, I realized how disingenuous that was.  The idea of ranking "the best" albums of the year is flawed because it is so personal and so mercurial.  Every day I feel the order change, then I realize how much there is out there that I don't know.  I spent most of my collecting budget on music from before 1975 and became increasingly more single oriented.  In short, talking about the "best albums of 2009" would be phony and would do injustice to an amazing year in music.  Instead, I have decided to do a show that looks back on the year and brushes upon the highlights.

My special guest is Danny Gabai.  He's my DJ partner and best friend; though on a cosmic level we are secretly trying to destroy each other.  Enjoy our shared demise.

The Christmas Theme

Today's theme is dedicated to a holiday we all have such mixed feelings about...especially because I'm Jewish: Christmas.  Walking into any given retail location, coffee shop, car wash etc. one cannot help but notice that Christmas music is everywhere...and it makes me want to destroy everything I come into contact with.  I exchange sympathetic glances with every clerk who is subjected to it in their own inescapable hell.  I have decided to put together a group of songs touching upon the subject of Christmas that are actually good.  It was not easy, but here is what I came up with (updated as I play them):

Last Episode of Fanfare For The Playing Man Ever: This Week's Theme is Closers

That's right!  Today is my last show at the 6-10am slot.  As such, I am retiring the title "Fanfare For The Playing Man", which I hadn't really been using for a while anyway.  Without explanation, the title sounds cheesy and with explanation (it is a cross between Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man and the Situationist International ideal.  The Situationist International was an art movement in France that believed urban centers were designed around the "working man".  Buildings were made to hold workers, proximity to their jobs was the point.  Infrastructure was created to get them to and keep them at work.  The Situationist International believed that this was akin to slavery and created urban designs for the playing man.  Buildings and cityscapes designed for interaction and play. Hence, Fanfare for the Playing Man...a celebration of the everyday human who escapes the mundanity of the city life as imposed by "the man") simply sounds overly pretentious.

My show is now moving to 12-2am Sundays/Mondays.  Please listen in.  I will continue doing theme shows.  The new title of my show is Mass Production.  Mass Production is the final (and my favorite) track on my favorite album of all time, Iggy Pop's "The Idiot".  You will hear Mass Production on today's show, because the theme is Closers.  All songs played today will be perfect ends to great albums.

Hello Friends.  Today is the second to last episode of Fanfare for the Playing Man.  In two weeks, I will officially leave this spot to make my move to Sundays (Monday mornings if you get technical about it) from Midnight to 2 am.  This move means that I keep getting to do my theme show even after I graduate, which is very exciting.
