Today's theme is dedicated to a holiday we all have such mixed feelings about...especially because I'm Jewish: Christmas. Walking into any given retail location, coffee shop, car wash etc. one cannot help but notice that Christmas music is everywhere...and it makes me want to destroy everything I come into contact with. I exchange sympathetic glances with every clerk who is subjected to it in their own inescapable hell. I have decided to put together a group of songs touching upon the subject of Christmas that are actually good. It was not easy, but here is what I came up with (updated as I play them):
Sparks - Thank God It's Not Christmas
The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)
Bob Dylan - Must Be Santa
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
The Walkmen - No Christmas While I'm Talking
Elliott Smith - King's Crossing
Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance!
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Run-DMC - Christmas In Hollis
Clarence Carter - Backdoor Santa
Otis Redding - Merry Christmas Baby
Darlene Love - Marshmallow World
Psychic TV - White Nights
The Olivia Tremor Control - Holiday Surprise 1,2,3
Broken Social Scene - Handjobs For The Holidays
Guided By Voices - Kicker Of Elves
Mogwai - Christmas Song
Okay, moving past the theme about songs involving Christmas directly. Let's move on to the Christmas spirit instead.
The Velvet Underground - The Gift
Dirty Projectors - Gimme Gimme Gimme
Gang of Four - Return The Gift
Jim O'Rourke Please Patronise Our Sponsors
Okay, let's close out loyal to my people. Here's what Jews do on Christmas
Biz Markie - Chinese Food
David Bowie - Life On Mars (The song is about going to the movies...get it?)
Belle & Sebastian - Nice Day For A Sulk
Buzzcocks - Sitting Round At Home
A Certain Ratio - All Night Party (Now Playing)
