I agree with everything you stated above. It really is possible to kick alcohol and drugs if you are willing to accept the lifestyle change.

I am not an addict but I like to always have beers at rock shows, but recently I just don't feel that great after drinking even a small amount. I met up with friends last Friday and I was the only one not drinking alcohol and they didn't notice; one asked if I wanted some beer from their pitcher but didn't even blink when I said no to it. I had just as much fun without alcohol.

I met a person in Iceland on one of my trips and they were really drunk and overdoing it. The next year I visited and they apologized to me for their behavior. I was about to shrug it off and they said that it was one of their 12 steps, to apologize for their behavior and they were very sincere; direct about it. I accepted their apology out of politeness but then said to them that I was not offended. In no way did they say that it was because of the disease or that it wasn't their fault that they were rude. They were taking responsibility for their actions now. Life was going much better; they felt so much better about everything and also getting tons of work done everyday on their music.

Other people here in the US have told me that they just stopped one day when they didn't feel good afterwards. Since then they haven't missed it. They didn't need a group to stop.

It really is a matter of acceptance and sometimes it means taking up a fun new hobby which can involve meeting new people in a positive setting. For example, if someone always wanted to knit; it's a way of becoming preoccupied with something creative as a way to channel frustration. There are free classes for stuff like this in every major city and often in the non-major cities. Just look at the local library's calendar of events to find them. I feel that creativity should be promoted instead of all this bible speak. Men or women could take that money they spent on their addictions and put it towards something productive. There's nothing more rewarding than completing something you made with your own hands.
