Peter Garland and Christopher Roberts

  Eclipse Quartet will give the premiere performance of Peter Garland's stunningly beautiful String Quartet #2, Crazy Cloud. Garland is a composer, world traveler, and iconoclastic champion of "radical consonance." He studied with Harold Budd and James Tenney, and maintained lengthy friendships with Lou Harrison, Conlon Nancarrow, Paul Bowles, and Dane Rudhyar.

  Roberts, composer, bassist, qin player, and world traveler, performs Last Cicada Singing, his suite of qin (Chinese zither) pieces described by KPFK's John Schneider as "truly haunting—crystaline harmonics dance among gutsy bass slides—elegant harmonies whisper their most private thoughts."

Trios for Deep Voices

  Composer Roberts performs his virtuosic, beautiful, compelling set of pieces for three double basses—Trios for Deep Voices.

  From its rapid passages of devilishly difficult harmonics and unique bowings to its pensive stretches of lyric, vocal-like melody, Trios is a stunning work inspired by the Star Mountain region of Papua, New Guinea, where Roberts has lived. Performing with the composer are David Young (principal bass, L.A. Opera Orchestra, and Jim Bergman.
