That's what they were called first, in '63. In February 1964, they changed their name to 'The Who'. Later that year they were nabbed by a mod manager named Peter Meaden, who convinced them to change their name to 'The High Numbers'. Summer of '64 they played this show at the Railway Tavern in London, which was filmed by the two guys who would eventually buy Meaden out and become The Who's managers, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. Stamp and Lambert had planned on making a movie about 'The High Numbers', but it never panned out. At the end of this show, Townshend accidentally jammed the head of his guitar through the ceiling of the place, and when the crowd started laughing at him he had a fit and smashed his instrument to bits. Next show, the crowd expected the same histrionics and when Townshend refused to break another guitar, Mr. Moon busted up his drum set, and The Who thenceforth became the band that broke instruments.
Anyway, I was really digging on this video a while back when a buddy of mine showed it to me, and tonight I came back to it because I was eating dinner with my folks and I started telling my dad that there was cooler stuff going on in the world in the early-mid 60s than The Beatles, and he got so upset I had to dredge up some proof.
Check out how young these guys are - how dorky Townshend looks (which can explain why he got so upset about the catcalls), how much Entwistle looks like Bill Wyman hugging his bass so tight like a beautiful child and plucking so high up the fretboard, how Daltrey looks so much like Lou Reed would a few years down the road, and probably most notably, how that 18 year old Keith Moon plays those fills on 'Keep From Cryin' with a finesse and ease so far beyond his years.
